Molluscum Contagiosum

What is Molluscum Contagiosum

The name molluscum contagiosum implies that the virus develops growths that are easily spread by skin contact. Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection. It is contagious disease and mostly school children are severely affected. Caused by a large pox virus, these smooth-walled, dome-shaped, pearly papules, 2 to 5 mm in size, have an umbilicated center. Occasionally a significant inflammatory reaction will occur. Molluscum Contagiosum is a common viral infection seen in AIDS. It is more difficult to eradicate in these patients.

Symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum Patient will notice the following signs -

  • doughnut shaped bumps
  • found on the genitals, thighs and buttocks.

Treatment of Molluscum Contagiosum

Treatment is done primarily for aesthetic reasons and to prevent the spread of infection. It may take from 6 months up to 5 years for all of the molluscum to go away. They may be more persistent in people with a weakened immune system. Medical treatments include:

  • Minor surgery , curettage (topical anaesthetic cream may be applied first) or laser ablation
  • Cryotherapy
  • Cantharidine
  • Imiquimod cream
  • Wart paints containing salicylic acid or podophyllin
