What is Intertrigo

Intertrigo is an inflammation of the top layers of skin caused by moisture, bacteria, or fungi in the folds of the skin. This is usually located in the inner thighs, armpits, and underside of the breasts or belly. Interigo condition may also be seen in people who are restricted to bed rest or in those who wear medical devices that may trap moisture against the skin, such as artificial limbs, splints, and braces. Intertrigo is most prevalent in the summer in hot tropical countries.

Bacteria and yeasts which are normally resident on the skin affected with intertrigo and multiply in such environments and may result in further damage to the skin.

Treatment of Intertrigo

A dermatologist should evaluate the condition since there are also several skin diseases that can cause an intertrigo to develop.

Prevention for Intertrigo

Keeping the area dry and exposed to the air can prevent recurrences.
