Guttate Psoriasis

What is Guttate Psoriasis

A form of psoriasis characterized by the rapid development of myriad small lesions, 3 to 10 mm in diameter, on all areas of the body, especially the extremities. The word guttate is derived from the Latin word gutta, meaning drop. It is more often seen in young people. This type of psoriasis can also be chronic and can be triggered by infections other than those from streptococcal bacteria.

The guttate form of psoriasis is relatively uncommon. Fewer than 2% of those with psoriasis have the guttate type. Medications, viral or bacterial infections, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of sunlight, overexposure to sunlight (sunburn), stress, cold climate, and frequent friction on the skin are also associated with flare-ups of psoriasis.

Guttate psoriasis goes away in a few weeks without treatment. Mild cases are usually treated at home. Topical medications include:

  • prescription or nonprescription dandruff shampoos
  • shampoos or lotions that contain coal tar
  • cortisone or other corticosteroids
  • lubricants
  • Vitamin D containing medications (Dovonex)
  • retinoids (Tazorac)
